Advising

Concentration advising appointments enable Biology Program advisors to assist students in optimizing their concentration and course choices to meet their individual academic and professional goals.

Students who are interested in any of the Program in Biology concentrations or the academic minors should consult an LSA general advisor during their freshman year and are encouraged to meet with a concentration advisor early in their academic career. It is not necessary to complete every prerequisite before declaring a concentration in biology.

Making a concentration advising appointment
Appointments are scheduled for 30 minutes; the duration of the appointment will depend upon what the student wishes to discuss. Students may discuss any aspect of their academic careers.

Students must come to the Program in Biology Office to make advising appointments. The office is located in Room 1111 in the Kraus Natural Science building. Appointments may not be made over the telephone, by e-mail or by fax.

Appointments are scheduled two days in advance in order to obtain and prepare the student’s advising file. This includes filling out a concentration check sheet for every student who has an appointment. Please be advised that the first three weeks and the last three weeks of fall and winter terms are the busiest times for advising in the biology program. During the rush it may take several weeks to get an appointment, so plan ahead.

Open office hours
Some “walk-in” advising is available for all concentrations and minors administered by the Program in Biology. “Walk-in” advising is meant for quick questions regarding class scheduling, investigation of concentrations, etc. Students who wish to declare their concentration or minor, fill out a concentration release form, etc., should make a formal advising appointment with a concentration advisor. The hours of “walk-in” advising may change from term to term. Please go to the Biology Program Office (1111 Kraus Natural Science building) for the “walk-in” advising schedule.

Spring/summer advising
There is limited advising during the spring and summer terms. Come to the Biology Program Office to make an appointment.
