Research interests
The importance of nutrient and light controls on phytoplankton primary productivity (PP) are fairly well understood in aquatic ecosystems. In addition, recent advances show the importance of the impacts of variable inputs of nutrients (such as storm events), and the influence of vertical mixing of algae through a highly variable but predictable light field. However, the relative importance and the interactions of these processes in controlling PP at an ecosystem scale are not well understood.
Specifically my research addresses the following questions:
(1) How does phytoplankton productivity respond to whole lake fertilization at 2x natural inputs of N and P? How is this response mediated by lake depth and the degree of benthic interactions? (2) How does (a) the structuring of the water column and (b) vertical movements of water control the availability of resources to phytoplankton? (3) How does within lake spatial and temporal distribution of resources control phytoplankton productivity? (4) How does (a) landscape position, (b) watershed vegetation and (c) proportion of water inputs that come directly from the catchment vs. draining through upstream lakes, affect the potential for phytoplankton production within a lake?
I address these questions using a combination of observation, experimentation, and mathematical modeling.
Academic background
I received a B.S. in Biology (Suma cum laude) from the University of Louisville in 1999. I completed a senior honors thesis on "The effects of increased Nitrate deposition on soil-water runoff" with Dr. Paul Bukaveckas. I completed my Ph.D. dissertation ("Phytoplankton ecology of arctic lakes") at the University of Michigan in 2007.
