There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed.  ~Mohandas K. Gandhi

Last Month's Events:

September 2007

  • Every Friday of the Year @ 3:00!  Friday afternoon Frisbee and Fun in the Arb - Every Friday at 3:00 PM come to the arb to play some just-for-fun ultimate, maybe have some snacks, and chill with a fun crowd.  The fun won't stop with winter - sledding, assuming it snows this year.  Sledding is at its best at night in the Arb.
  • Friday September 14 @ 4:00.  Follow up meeting specifically for putting on Green Rush this Friday at 4:00 PM Dana Commons
  • Monday, September 15 5:00 Rainforest Action Network Wants You!Monday, September 15 5:00 PM Inter-Group Environmental Council/Environmental Ninjas will meet with Brihannala Morgan from RainForest Action Network and recent UM grad, to discuss the Agribusiness Campaign.

This is a piece of Bria's message:
"Michigan is going to be a focus area for our new Agribusiness campaign, and I wanted to connect with the environmental community at UMich, about it. We'll be targeting Archer Daniels Midland, Cargill and Bunge for their role in the expansion of destructive palm oil and soy plantations across the world. As you may or may not know, the expansion is rife with destruction of pristine rainforest, emission of greenhouse gases through land burning, displacement of local communities, and a lot more. And the US is playing an even bigger role with the increasing demand for industrial biofuels. (For more information, check out our website: http://ran.org/what_we_do/rainforest_agribusiness/ .)
All three of these companies either have offices in, or are based in, the Midwest. I am looking to connect with people and organizations who are interested in these issues who might want to help us take on these companies! We will be bringing a delegation of people from affected communities in Brazil, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea to Chicago in November, as well as doing actions across the Midwest, and starting up on-going campus- and community- based campaigns."
RAN is an awesome organization, and this has the potential to be a powerful collaboration.  Her email address is brihannala@ran.org.  Bria is also the new media master for the Energy Action Coaliton , organizers of Power Shift

  • Friday September 21 application deadline for Sustainable Energy Development in South America Course.  The Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute ( http://provost.umich.edu/gesi ) is pleased to announce a university-wide opportunity for students interested in studying international issues of environmental sustainability.  The first course in the newly created Graham Scholars Program will be CEE 490: Sustainable Energy Development in South America. • GREEN RUSH event on Sunday September 23 @ 2:00 PM. It will showcase environmental groups, give students a clear picture of all the awesome initiatives going on around campus and create a warm, welcoming, and FUN communal vibe between environmental groups.

    Green Rush

 Green Rush!Sunday September 23 @ 2:00 PM
 Ice-Breaker Facilitators - Andrew,
Schedule
If the weather is nice this is a picture of how the day will go -
2:00 Meet outside the Dana building and do ice breakers.  Assuming we get 100+ students (a worthy goal, right?), we should probably split into groups.
2:15 Go to Dana Commons, where each group can give a preview of all the cool stuff they will be doing over the course of the year.

"Speakers"
            Andrew - MSSC, Power Shift
2:45 "Keynote" Speaker - The idea here is to bring a professor in to give some brief words along the lines of "Apply what you learn in the classroom to real life.  You've got the power!"            Andrew is inviting Tom Gladwin.

3:00  Potential Scavenger Hunt ending in the Arb.  JoJo of Environmental Dems is going to put together a fun, environmentally themed scavenger hunt to get students to the Arb.  I also suggest that we have a walking group for students who want to discuss what they've heard in the meeting thus far.
 Information about the Scavenger Hunt

 Walk-and-Talk Facilitators

3:30 Potluck Picnic in the Arb!  Bring food, acoustic guitars, frisbees, and other instruments of fun (keeping it "family friendly") for the afternoon.
Plates/Cups/Utensils
Everyone bring your own dishes and flatware.  Bring some extras for friends and we won't have to waste a bunch of paper.

  • September 25 EEB Research Open House 12-1pm 2009 Ruthven Museum

Meet EEB (ecology and evolutionary biology) professors and learn about opportunities for undergraduate research. (flyer posted on ctools w/profs listed)

  • September 29 from 8:00 am to 1pm – Earthworks Garden volunteer work and learn about urban agriculture.

The EarthWorks Garden started in partnership between the Capuchin Soup Kitchen and Gleaners Community Food Bank as a small plot of land in the inner city of Detroit and has grown to 3/4 of an acre on three plots. Complete with a greenhouse, EarthWork’s primary goal is the education of Detroit area school children in areas of science, nutrition and biodiversity of organic agriculture. The project also yields fresh produce to benefit such programs as WIC and the Soup Kitchen’s daily meals.
