21 litter collection baskets were installed in the DIRT plot study area on September 19, 1994. Each basket is located near a plot. Baskets installed initially were 1846 cm2 in area (35.3 cm * 52 cm), although replacement baskets may have slightly different dimensions. Leaf litter is collected and dried for 1 approximately one week at 50°C, unless otherwise noted, and the oven-dry weight is recorded. Data are expressed as kilograms oven-dry leaf litter per hectare (kg/ha). Litterfall mass is given for each basket which is identified by the nearby plot number, for each collection date. Sums across all dates are given for each basket.

NOTES:

1994: On September 19, 1994, recent leaf litter beneath each basket was collected and put inside the basket. Litterfall was subsequently collected on four dates between September 30 and November 11. Collected material was dried at 70 °C for approximately 48 hours before weighing.

1995: Litterfall was collected four times between October 2 and November 21. The October 2 collection included litter which had fallen since November 11, 1994. The litter in this collection was somewhat to mostly decomposed. The 1995 data represent a full year of litterfall. The litter was dried at 70 ° C for about 48 hours and the weight was recorded.

1999: Litterfall collection suspended since 1995. Baskets were emptied on August 29, 1995. Some baskets were relocated. One collection was made this year on November 21.

2000: Litterbaskets were vandalized early in 2000, so there is no litterfall data for November 21, 1999, through April 13, 2000. The first collection on July 14 represents litter fallen between April 13, 2000, and July 14, 2000.
