Coarse Woody Debris

The annual woody litter inputs (mass, %C, and %N) to the soils at the DIRT site are estimated from material collected from the NO INPUTS plots. CWD (coarse woody debris) is defined as woody material approximately 0.8 to 2.5 cm in diameter, fallen within the plot boundary. The material is collected several times during the year when litterfall is collected. Its weight is recorded after oven-drying for at least one week at 50° C.

CWD collection began in 1998. Previously fallen CWD was cleared from the No Inputs plots in November 1997. The first quantified collection was made in June 1998.

Note: collection of September 9, 1999: samples for plots 16 and 17 were combined; recorded weights are half the total weight of the combined material.

Data:

SAMPLE TYPE = CWD
DATE = YrMoDy
PLOT = plot number, 1-21
BLOCK = block number, I, II, or III
CWD Mass by plot = oven-dry weight of sample in g, also expressed as g/m2 and kg/ha
ns = no CWD present
nd = plot was not sampled
