The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology was founded in 2001 after reorganization of the biological sciences in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts at the University of Michigan. 

The department comprises over 30 faculty members with diverse research interests in the following areas:

• Population
• Community and ecosystem ecology
• Evolutionary biology
• Systematics
• Behavior Paleontology

A number of our  faculty have joint appointments in:  

• Museum of Zoology
• University Herbarium
• Museum of Paleontology
• School of Natural Resources & Environment
• Life Sciences Institute
   
  They are affiliated with programs such as:
• The Center for the Study of Complex Systems
• The Program in Bioinformatics
• The Program in American Culture
